3D Imaging: Get the Most Information Possible!

Hello Doctors!

Now that summer is about to be over, it is time to get back into the swing of things! The Passion 4 Dentistry Study Club is back for another academic year of education, collaboration, debate, and networking with our dental colleagues.

It is official: The Passion 4 Dentsitry Study Club is now AGD/PACE Certified and will be handing out CE credits!

In September's installment of our study club, we will examine 3D imaging of the maxillo-mandibular region. It is a relatively young technology but serves our patients in a stunning and completely diagnostic way.

3D Imaging offers a whole new perspective on dentistry. Imagine visualizing the TMJ from all directions, assessing the airway in snorers, looking at impacted wisdom teeth, understanding root morphology before endodontic therapy, assessing skeletal relationships before orthodontic therapy, or planning out an implant case. You can do that today with 3D imaging!

You will gain insight on reading 3D images, understanding nomenclature and anatomy of the skull, learn some pathology, understand implant planning, diagnosis skills, and software skills with myself: Umar Haque, DMD, FICOI, DADIA. I have undertaken numerous CE courses on CT evaluation and diagnosis with medical radiologists and dental radiologists. Come with a thirst for knowledge and a desire to excel in your profession!

You will be provided with 3 CE credits through AGD/PACE and a lovely dinner (salad, pizza, and soft drinks). It will be on September 29, 2011 from 6PM to 9PM at the Henry Schein Dental Facilty at 501 W Lake St., Suite 108 in Elmhurst, IL 60126-1419. Dinner will be served at 5:30PM and will be a great opportunity to connect with your fellow dentists and dental professionals! The registration fee is $30 and can be made through PayPal after clicking "Register Now" below.

Description:

In today's economy the demand for direct restorations has dramatically increased. Patients are demanding options which are more affordable, yet esthetic. Many new tooth colored restorative materials have been designed for optimized physical and optical qualities. However, no single material universally satisfies the needs of our patients. The astute clinician must be knowledgeable about all the available materials when treatment planning and understand the techniques necessary to produce consistent results.

Given ample time, moisture control, appropriate size, and a cooperative patient, excellent results can be achieved with composite restorations. Predictable class II restorations require specific skills and techniques to achieve reliable success. However, composite materials have limitations creating the need for alternative esthetic restorative materials suitable for use in less than ideal conditions. Glass Ionomer restorative materials can serve as a therapeutic restorative material, reducing post-operative sensitivity and potential recurrent decay. This course is an excellent way to update your skills in placing direct tooth-colored restorations.

Course Objectives:

- How to dramatically reduce post-operative sensitivity and achieve predictable and reliable Class II interproximal contacts.
- The latest information on the nano/hybrid low shrink composite resin materials will be presented.
- Learn how to select and place therapeutic glass ionomer restorations and how to reliably place long-lasting posterior composite restorations from an actively practicing dentist.

Passion 4 Dentistry Study Club Recap: October 20, 2010

Last night, Dr. Joseph Favia and Dr. Umar Haque presented along with 28 enthusiastic and energetic doctors at the Henry Schein facility in Elmhurst, Illinois. The focus was dental implants and comprehensive dentistry.

Dr. Favia started off with a alecture focusing on dental implants. Dr. Favia runs some amazing implant placement courses and he got into the basics of dental implant placement. He narrowed in on the CAMLOG implant system and why he is a fan of its surgical simplicity and elegance.

Dr. Haque continued the meeting with a literature review from The Journal of Clinical Oral Implants Research. The article was titled, "Oral rehabilitation using Camlog screw-cylinder implants with a particle-blasted and acid-etched microstructured surface. Results from a prospective study with special consideration of short implants." It basically discussed the difference between the prognosis of short versus long implants and found that there really was no significant difference in their osseointegration.

This was followed by a group discussion of two clinical cases and how the doctors in attendance would diagnose and treatment plan the cases. Dr. Bob Jourda, Dr. Vesna Sutter, Dr. Darren Simpson, and many other doctors gave their input and feedback to help spark some excellent intellectual debate and discussion. It really got the wheels turning.

Overall, it was a fun evening of dentistry! Keep the PASSION 4 DENTISTRY alive!!!

Thanks Josh! What a Great Evening!

Last night, Josh Scott from The Paragon Program came to the Passion for Dentistry Study Club at Carlucci's Restaurant in Downers Grove and gave a great speech on Recession-Proofing Your Practice. Dr. Umar Haque from Oak Brook iCAT and Oak Brook Smiles and James Iwinski from Premium Dental Lab organized the event. Medco Surgical Supplies and CAMLOG Dental Implants sponsored the event as well.

Over 20 doctors attended, including some prestigious dentists in Chicago and its suburbs. We were honored to have the Northwestern Dental School professor and prosthodontist: Dr. Bernard Muzynski, the LVI and Hornbrook instructor: Dr. Sheldon Seidman, the talented Dr. Robert Jourdan from Always Great Smiles, the Fridge's dentist: Dr. Vesna Sutter, a great comprehensive care and TMJ dentist: Dr. Darren Simpson, along with a great dentist in Elmhurst: Dr. Kurt Carlson, one of Paragon's client's: Dr. Sherif Albert, and a number of other dentists.

After introductions and acknowledgements, Medco raffled off a set of periotomes. Dr. Vesna Sutter won them.

Then Josh Scott came to speak, since Ken Runkle was not well. Josh gave a riveting talk on some concepts that most dentists don't consider when trying to improve their office: the business of having a practice. He discussed many factors that we need to take into account when taking care of our patients and when trying to get to the next level that we all can achieve.

Josh talked about the importance and value of dentistry, customer service, time management, managing overheads, and staff encouragement. One great quote he brought forth by Charles Mayo, "Preventive dentistry can add 10 years to human life."

His lecture was followed up by a discussion about some elements of his talk and then a nice dinner by Carlucci's.

Dr. Haque also discussed his CT scanning center and implant center, James talked about Premium, and Rudy Wolf talked about CAMLOG dental implants.

It was a lovely evening, and we look forward to future meetings!
