Passion 4 Dentistry Study Club Recap: October 20, 2010

Last night, Dr. Joseph Favia and Dr. Umar Haque presented along with 28 enthusiastic and energetic doctors at the Henry Schein facility in Elmhurst, Illinois. The focus was dental implants and comprehensive dentistry.

Dr. Favia started off with a alecture focusing on dental implants. Dr. Favia runs some amazing implant placement courses and he got into the basics of dental implant placement. He narrowed in on the CAMLOG implant system and why he is a fan of its surgical simplicity and elegance.

Dr. Haque continued the meeting with a literature review from The Journal of Clinical Oral Implants Research. The article was titled, "Oral rehabilitation using Camlog screw-cylinder implants with a particle-blasted and acid-etched microstructured surface. Results from a prospective study with special consideration of short implants." It basically discussed the difference between the prognosis of short versus long implants and found that there really was no significant difference in their osseointegration.

This was followed by a group discussion of two clinical cases and how the doctors in attendance would diagnose and treatment plan the cases. Dr. Bob Jourda, Dr. Vesna Sutter, Dr. Darren Simpson, and many other doctors gave their input and feedback to help spark some excellent intellectual debate and discussion. It really got the wheels turning.

Overall, it was a fun evening of dentistry! Keep the PASSION 4 DENTISTRY alive!!!

Thanks Josh! What a Great Evening!

Last night, Josh Scott from The Paragon Program came to the Passion for Dentistry Study Club at Carlucci's Restaurant in Downers Grove and gave a great speech on Recession-Proofing Your Practice. Dr. Umar Haque from Oak Brook iCAT and Oak Brook Smiles and James Iwinski from Premium Dental Lab organized the event. Medco Surgical Supplies and CAMLOG Dental Implants sponsored the event as well.

Over 20 doctors attended, including some prestigious dentists in Chicago and its suburbs. We were honored to have the Northwestern Dental School professor and prosthodontist: Dr. Bernard Muzynski, the LVI and Hornbrook instructor: Dr. Sheldon Seidman, the talented Dr. Robert Jourdan from Always Great Smiles, the Fridge's dentist: Dr. Vesna Sutter, a great comprehensive care and TMJ dentist: Dr. Darren Simpson, along with a great dentist in Elmhurst: Dr. Kurt Carlson, one of Paragon's client's: Dr. Sherif Albert, and a number of other dentists.

After introductions and acknowledgements, Medco raffled off a set of periotomes. Dr. Vesna Sutter won them.

Then Josh Scott came to speak, since Ken Runkle was not well. Josh gave a riveting talk on some concepts that most dentists don't consider when trying to improve their office: the business of having a practice. He discussed many factors that we need to take into account when taking care of our patients and when trying to get to the next level that we all can achieve.

Josh talked about the importance and value of dentistry, customer service, time management, managing overheads, and staff encouragement. One great quote he brought forth by Charles Mayo, "Preventive dentistry can add 10 years to human life."

His lecture was followed up by a discussion about some elements of his talk and then a nice dinner by Carlucci's.

Dr. Haque also discussed his CT scanning center and implant center, James talked about Premium, and Rudy Wolf talked about CAMLOG dental implants.

It was a lovely evening, and we look forward to future meetings!

Dr. Pallotto Hits a Funny Bone with an Informative and Humorous Lecture

On March 18, 2010, the Passion for Dentistry Study Club had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Chris Pallotto. The title of his lecture was: "Emerging New Bone Grafting Technologies". It was held at Costa's Restaurant located at 1S130 Summit Avenue, Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. He discussed some of the new bone grafting materials and techniques that he used and discussed recent literature about bone grafting.

Bone grafting is the emerging standard of care after a dental extraction. This prevents the bone loss that normally occurs within a couple of weeks after a dental extraction. After a dental extraction is complete, a bone graft prevents bone loss.

Bone grafting is also used in order to establish a larger quantity of bone before placement of dental implants. This is usually determined after a CT scan is taken to evaluate bone density and bone volume during treatment planning.

Dr. Pallotto discussed grafting techniques, and a new material on the dental market called Accell, which is a bone grafting material that has BMP (bone morphogenic protein) built into it. This dramatically increases bone formation and healing in a grafting site. Other materials discussed were DynaBlast and DynaMatrix. He also discussed some of the fun elements of private practice.

Pallotto: A Chicago native, Dr. Christopher Pallotto, earned a B.S. in Biology from Loyola University in 1981 and his D.D.S. at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1986.
